Jelena Jankovic put much more effort in win over Swede Sofia Arvidsson than it was exected from World #3 in her first match in tournament. As a matter a fact, Jelena achieved a little miracle in a win against World #63.
Jelena was trailing 1:5 in 3rd set and eventually won the match 2:1 in sets, 6:7 (7:9) 6:2 7:6(11:9), that lasted 2 and a half hours, with only 3rd set lasting 67 minutes.
Jelena was close to destiny of her compatriot Novak (Djokovic, ATP World #3) who saw early exit from Miami Open in Round 2, still with increadable fight and will to win Jelena managed to find her way up from almost the lost situation.
Jelena made 56 'winners', but also the same number of unforced errors. In first set, both players made 2 breaks, and the Swede had more nerves in 13th game for a win. Second set was all about Jelena and soon it was 1:1 in sets.
In 3rd set, Sofia put her play to the maximum and achieved 5:1 lead. Jelena was known to be able to lose almost a won match when leading 5:1 herself but this time she was the one to rise up and make a huge comeback.
In great style, Jelena won the next 4 games, made it to the tie-break which she won 11:9, after Sofia having 5 match points. Maybe Jelena felt too much at home in Miami having a house there. Anyway, she will be on court today, Sunday March 30th, against Lucie Safarova.
Lucie is World #39 with the career high in Singles at #22 in August 2007. She reached Round 1 in this year's Australian Open and lost against Ashley Harkleroad in Indian Wells R64 in 3 sets, 6:7(2) 6:2 4:6.
Jelena played against Lucie on two occassions and both won. Lucie won in her previous two matches in Miami Open against S. Cirstea 2:0 and K. Knapp 2:1. The match will start not before 2pm local time.
